How to Read Scripture Faithfully

September 23, 2024

The Power of God's Word

As we gather together in the presence of God, it is important to approach scripture not just as text, but as the living Word, breathed into being by the Holy Spirit. Scripture is a light to our paths, guiding us into deeper relationship with God and shaping us into the likeness of Christ. Let's explore what it means to read scripture faithfully, so that it can transform our hearts and minds.

1. Scripture: The Foundation of Our Faith

Reading scripture is vital for followers of Christ. It provides the foundation upon which we build our faith. As Paul wrote to Timothy, "All scripture is God-breathed and is useful for teaching, rebuking, correcting, and training in righteousness" (2 Timothy 3:16). Through scripture, we learn about God's character, His desires for us, and how to live in alignment with His will. When we approach the Bible, we are not merely reading a historical document, but encountering the voice of God.

2. How Jesus Read Scripture

Throughout His ministry, Jesus demonstrated the importance of scripture. He frequently quoted from the Old Testament, particularly the Psalms and the prophets, to teach, correct, and reveal His identity as the Messiah. Even in His most painful moments on the cross, He quoted Psalm 22, crying, "My God, my God, why have you forsaken me?" Jesus modeled faithful reading of scripture by immersing Himself in the Word and allowing it to shape His life and ministry.

3. Wesley’s Approach to Faithful Reading

John Wesley, the founder of Methodism, had a deep love for scripture. He believed that the Bible was authoritative for all aspects of life and encouraged others to read it faithfully. Wesley’s own transformation came when he attended a Bible study where the book of Romans was being read. In that moment, his "heart was strangely warmed," and he experienced God’s grace in a profound way. Wesley reminds us that faithful reading of scripture can bring us closer to God and help us understand His will for our lives.

4. Reading Scripture in Community

While personal Bible study is essential, reading scripture in community adds another layer of growth and accountability. As United Methodists, we believe that scripture comes alive when studied together, as we share insights, ask questions, and discern God’s message for our collective lives. Whether in a Sunday school class, Bible study, or small group, gathering with others to explore God’s Word enriches our understanding and strengthens our faith.

Reflection Questions:

  1. How has reading scripture shaped your relationship with God and others?
  2. In what ways can you invite the Holy Spirit to guide you into a deeper understanding of God’s Word?

A Prayer for Illumination:

Faithful God,
Your Word is a lamp unto our feet and a light unto our path. As we come before You, we ask that You illuminate our hearts and minds by the power of Your Holy Spirit. Help us to receive what You offer through Your living Word. Shape us more and more into the likeness of Your Son, Jesus, and give us the wisdom to live in accordance with Your will. In the name of Jesus, we pray. Amen.
